Something's off?

Let's sort it out. Most problems have a short answer below. Everything else goes into the bug form further down, and I'll have a look.

Windows

Windows warns about the installer

Windows says "Windows protected your PC" and only offers "Don't run". That's SmartScreen. It warns about every installer it doesn't know, and since mine isn't code-signed yet, it doesn't know me. The publisher shows up as "Unknown", which is fair from Windows' point of view.

Click More info, then Run anyway. If you'd like to be sure first, compare the checksum.

Windows

Empty window on Windows

Both apps draw their window with Microsoft Edge WebView2. The installer adds it when it's missing, but a strict company policy can block that, and then you get an empty window or nothing at all.

Install the "Evergreen" WebView2 runtime from Microsoft's WebView2 page, then start the app again.

Linux

App won't start on Linux

The apps need WebKitGTK 4.1 to draw their window. apt normally installs it with the package. If it's missing anyway, the app tells you so and shows the command:

sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0

WebKitGTK 4.1 comes with Linux Mint 21, Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and anything newer; older systems don't have it, so the apps don't run there. No message at all? Start the app from a terminal, note what it says, and tell me.

Your data

Where your data lives

Everything is a JSON file you can open, read, copy and back up. Nothing hides in a database or in the cloud.

What Windows Linux
LocalSound library Your .lsound file, wherever you saved it. Plain JSON.
LocalMoney accounts Your .lmoney file (Accounts.lmoney by default), wherever you saved it. A zip with accounts.json inside, password optional.
Settings Documents\LocalSound\userSettings.json
Documents\LocalMoney\userSettings.json
Same file names, in a LocalSound or LocalMoney folder in your documents or home folder
Install ID %AppData%\ArchaicTools\<App>\install.json ~/.config/archaictools/<app>/install.json
Log files %LocalAppData%\ArchaicTools\<App>\LogFiles ~/.local/state/archaictools/<app>/LogFiles
The apps themselves %LocalAppData%\LocalSound
%LocalAppData%\LocalMoney
/usr/lib/archaictools/localsound
/usr/lib/archaictools/localmoney

Make it yours

Your own theme or language

Both apps find new themes and languages by themselves at the next start. No plugin system, no SDK, just files.

A language is one JSON file in the app folder's MultiLanguage folder, named after its language code, for example es.json. Copy en.json, translate the texts, restart the app, and pick your language in the settings.

A theme is a folder in wwwroot/css/themes with a config.json (its code and name) and a theme.css, plus fonts and images if it needs them. Copy an existing theme folder, change whatever you like, restart, and pick it in the settings.

Building a theme for LocalSound? Switch on Enable browser access on this computer in the settings. LocalSound then shows a local address that any browser on this computer can open, so you can work on your theme with the browser's developer tools and copy the result into your theme.css. Switch it off again when you're done.

LocalMoney has no such switch, deliberately: your finances stay inside the app window and nowhere else. For LocalMoney themes, it's edit, restart, admire, repeat.

The app folder is listed above. Keep a copy of your work, because an update may replace the app folder.

Updates

Staying up to date

Windows: the apps check for a new version when they start. If there is one, they ask, download it and install it on the next restart. You can switch the automatic check off in the settings, and check by hand under Settings › Check for updates.

Linux: new versions come with your regular system updates, through apt; the install adds ArchaicTools to apt's package sources for that. The apps tell you when one is available; restart the app once the system update has installed it.

Uninstall

Breaking up

No questions asked.

Windows: Settings › Apps › Installed apps, then LocalSound or LocalMoney › Uninstall.

Linux:

sudo apt purge localsound localmoney

purge also takes the ArchaicTools package source along. Your library and accounts files stay where they are. They're yours, after all. Want a completely clean slate? Also delete the settings folders listed above.

Bugs

Report a bug

Something crashes, breaks or behaves oddly? Tell me. The more precise, the faster it gets fixed.

An error the app noticed is in its log files: Help › Open log files folder opens them, one file per day, kept for a week. Paste the lines from around the time it happened into the description. Read them first, though: they can contain file paths, and those might include your user name.

In the app under Help › About
What happened, and what did you expect instead?
Only if you'd like an answer. It's used for nothing else, see privacy.

I read everything. Answers can take a while: there's only one of me.

Wishes

Wishing for something?

Wishes get a place of their own: the ArchaicTribe.

The ArchaicTribe will be the place for wishes on this website. You post wishes for LocalSound and LocalMoney, everyone in the tribe votes on them, and the wishes with the most votes are the ones I build next.

It isn't open yet, so for now your wishes will have to wait. Bugs don't: they go into the form above.
